Cheerleading

Well i decided to make this one more of a poll type of post.

Here is the question:

Do you think Cheerleading is a sport?

Personally I don't think so because they are just 0ut there cheering on the people who are out there doing something. All the do is just stand there and watch just like the people in the stands but it looks like that they are not even into the event. It seems like they would rather be somewhere else besides at that event.

Now Doug, don't hate me... But yes i do think cheerleading is a sport. i'm not going to be one of those raving proponets of competitive cheerleading, but i think it does have a lot of qualities worth noting: the athleticism involved should be recognized as well as all those back flips and things. The best of the best are intriguing obviously but lets face it: high school cheerleading is a joke. Always has been and always will be.

It really depends on what kind of cheerleading you're talking about. Sure there's our high school cheerleading team, we're all aware that they're kind of a joke. It's not their fault though, I don't really think they have a proper coach.

But competitive cheerleading definitely is a sport. Have you seen those girls? Some of them have nicer abs then our entire football team put together. They don't cheer for teams and instead compete at national cheer competitions. They're basically beasts. I wish I could do have of the things they can do with their bodies.

By the way Doug I hope you think dance is a sport. Or we are going to have some serious arguing to do.

hmph, I thought I posted here.

Anyways, I think this is a really tough question. I would agree with Chris saying that it does involve quite a talent, and that in High School it is a joke. However, I don't like calling things that are determined by judges a sport. I think of it like rhythmic gymnastics in the Olympics: It is hard, but in the end, indescribable.

^^^^I just read that over and realized how evasive I was towards the question...

I think real competitive cheerleading is a sport. However, when it comes to high school cheerleading, I go by some obscure quote I heard in middle school: "Cheerleading is as much of a sport as ping-pong".
Granted, there are probably people out there who would argue that ping-pong is a sport as well, so this all might be null and void.
